You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence

and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Psalm 16:11 New Living Translation (NLT)

Joy can be a challenging thing to walk in. I often find things standing in opposition of joy. It could be something simple that bothers me, or it could be genuine tragedy. Whatever the case may be, on any given day I can find something standing in the way of joy. And I feel like I am not alone in that. The human condition can make it really difficult to find joy. It’s one of the consequences of sin. We have to face things that would destroy our joy. So how do we do it? How do we walk in the joy of the Lord?

For me, it’s a matter of managing expectations. I have to choose joy not based on what I’m thinking or feeling. If that were the case, then I might never walk in His joy. But I will choose joy because of this passage: “You grant me the joy of your presence, and the pleasures of living with you forever.” I’m going to choose to have joy because I am filled with the Holy Spirit. Even when life gets hard. Even when things stand in direct opposition to happiness. I’m going to choose to celebrate the fact that I get to sit with Jesus forever, and His Spirit is in me. I think that’s what true joy and happiness are.

I want to challenge you this week to choose joy. Almost all things in life are a choice. Don’t let the brokenness of the world stop you from getting excited when you think about eternity with the Lord. “You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.”
