Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)

Someone recently gave me a great compliment and told me how much they appreciated and loved me. It felt good. Few things feel better than receiving heartfelt praise and appreciation from someone else. Did you know God loves it, too? He smiles when we express our adoration and gratitude to Him.

We praise God for who He is and we thank God for what He has done. (Hebrews 13:15; Psalm 116:17)

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 100 (ESV)

David said, “I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord” (Psalm 69:30-31 NIV). Give thanks to the God of heaven, For His lovingkindness (graciousness, mercy, compassion) endures forever” (Psalm 136:26 AMP).

An amazing thing happens when we offer praise and thanksgiving to God. When we give God enjoyment, our own hearts are filled with joy!

My mom loved to cook my favorite foods. Even after I married and would visit my parents, Mom still loved to cook my favorite dishes. One of her great pleasures in life was watching me enjoy what she prepared. The more I enjoyed eating it, the more enjoyment it gave her. But I also enjoyed pleasing my mom by expressing my enjoyment of her food. It works both ways. As I would eat my favorite food, I would rave about it and praise my mom. I intended not only to enjoy the food but to please my mom. We both were happy.

Worship works both ways, too. We enjoy what God has done for us, and when we express that enjoyment to God, it brings Him joy—but it also increases our joy. The book of Psalms says, “The righteous are glad and rejoice in his presence; they are happy and shout for joy” (Psalm 68:3 TEV).

Take some time today and thank God for His many blessings in your life.
