I’ve never heard the audible voice of God, but I know when God speaks to me. He speaks to me through the Holy Spirit. He speaks to me during my prayer/quiet time and reading God’s Word. The Holy Spirit gives me suggestions. He puts impressions in my mind and gives me direction. He speaks to me and quiets my spirit. My favorite part is when the Holy Spirit teaches me.

Jesus says in John 14:26“The Holy Spirit … will be your teacher and will bring to your minds all that I have said to you” (Phillips).

In the New Year, many people look for a fitness or personal life coach, someone who knows a great deal more about a subject than they do and can help them achieve their goals. People spend thousands of dollars on these coaches. I already have a life coach. And I’ve had this life coach for more than 50 years. His name is the Holy Spirit. I constantly ask God, “What do you want me to do next? Holy Spirit, what do you want me to do about a particular situation?”

In the passage above, it says “bring to your minds.” The Holy Spirit will speak directly to your mind. As I said, I’ve never heard the audible voice of God. I don’t need to. God doesn’t need to speak to me audibly when He can go directly to my mind.

There is only one problem with His “bringing to your mind.” If the Holy Spirit is going to bring God’s truth to your mind, you need something in there to bring out. That’s why you need to regularly be in your Bible. When you are regularly reading, studying, and filling your mind with God’s Word, you are storing God’s truth in your mind, and that’s when the Holy Spirit can bring it to mind at just the right time.

Have you ever read the Bible and felt or even said, “I didn’t get anything out of it today”? This may surprise you, but I don’t get earth shaking thoughts every time I read the Bible. But what I’m doing is storing God’s truth in my mind. Your mind is like a computer with limitless storage for memory. Your mind is storing up things you’ve seen or heard – every magazine article, every commercial, every bad joke, every TV show or movie. It’s all stored in your mind. You need to balance your mind with the truth. The Holy Spirit can bring God’s truth to your mind and direct you in the way you should go.

If you have yet to establish a quiet time habit with God (prayer and Bible study), begin today!
